Start with the buying decision

Write down who buys, what they need to compare and why they would choose your products. A store for a considered luxury purchase needs different detail from a repeat-order catalog. Describe the experience you want in terms of customer tasks, such as comparing finishes or requesting a delivery quote, instead of listing animations and features first.

Inventory the commercial rules

Document product families, variants, stock ownership, shipping destinations, returns and the people who handle orders. Identify rules that change by product or customer type. Examples include made-to-order items, oversized delivery and wholesale eligibility. Unresolved operational rules become expensive design assumptions if they are discovered after checkout is built.

Separate launch requirements from later improvements

For each feature, state the problem it solves, the existing provider and whether it is essential for launch. Product discovery, accurate pricing and dependable checkout come before optional wish lists or loyalty tools. Customer portals, subscriptions and advanced personalization need explicit scope rather than being implied by the phrase custom store.

Bring a useful brief to a developer

Include representative product records, approved brand assets, platform access requirements and any existing store URLs. Provide screenshots of a problem without sending passwords or customer data. Ask the proposal to name deliverables, content responsibilities, integrations, test environments and exclusions. A price cannot be meaningfully fixed before the operating requirements are understood.
