Record what currently exists
Inventory product and category URLs, catalog fields, variants, images and important customer-facing pages. Identify active integrations, payment configuration and records that need retention. Keep recoverable copies of code, assets, configuration and relevant data; a Git repository alone does not contain every part of an operating store.
Map records and URLs deliberately
Agree how product identifiers, variants and customer records map to the new platform. Build relevant redirects for changed URLs instead of sending every retired product to the homepage. Decide how discontinued products and unavailable variants should behave. Handle personal data only through an approved process with the appropriate access.
Use rehearsal imports and test orders
Import representative records into a safe environment and compare prices, images, options and inventory. Exercise shipping, tax configuration and refunds with provider test facilities. Do not create real customer orders to test a migration. Document what can be rolled back and which provider settings must be restored separately.
Plan the switch and follow-up
Set a content and order cutover procedure so two systems do not both accept or lose updates. After launch, check important redirects, catalog searches, payment handoff and confirmation. Monitor actual error reports and resolve discrepancies with named owners. A successful deployment does not prove every historic URL or order record migrated correctly.
